How to use eCigs & e-Liquid Vaporizers

My Von Erl eCig

If you have never used an e-cig or an e-liquid vaporizer (or you have and just want to learn more), I have come up with a detailed guide on how to use e-cigs (replace cartomizer), closed pods (pop in and draw), vape pens (fill your tank) and vape mods (most specifically sub-ohm tanks). Now, while learning how to use these are crucial, you should also understand the different ways to inhale your vapor as well.

Before we continue, did you remember to read the previous page in our education series? We had discussed the different types of e-liquid vaporizers like e-cigs and vape mods. If you missed it, check it out first.

To apply this knowledge and learn for yourself how to use these vapes, take a look at my best e-cigs and best 510 tanks and see for yourself! 🙂

For this guide, we shall take a look at different inhales as well as how to use the different kinds of vaporizers.

Inhalation: Mouth to Lung VS Direct Lung Inhale

Before we dive into how to use the different types of e-liquid vaporizers on the market, let’s briefly cover the different ways to inhale vapor from your vape.

Each method used will alter your vaping experience, and each one is ideal for individual machines and e-liquid types.

The two different ways to inhale vapor is mouth to the lung (MTL) and Direct Lung Inhale (DLI). MTL is most similar to smoking a traditional tobacco cigarette while DLI resembles a hit that a vaper would take from a bong.

Vapor from a vaporizer

Mouth to Lung

To use the mouth to lung method, you would first take in the vapor into your mouth and then inhale it into your lungs. MTL creates a subtle sensation that carries less of a throat hit and more flavor as the vapor sits in your mouth first. MTL is best suited for vapes that are high ohm and low battery (like the JUUL by Pax Vapor). This method also pairs well with PG-based e-liquids.

Direct Lung Inhale

To use the direct lung inhale, you would take a deep breath from your vape which draws in all the vapor into your lungs. This method is best suited for sub-ohm vaping. DLI creates a more intense hit and if you are a cloud chaser, this is the method for you. I can recommend the best vape mod for you. To use the DLI, the best set up requires an RDA or a sub-ohm tank. This method also works best with VG-based e-liquids.

There are two kinds of e-cigs: the one-time, disposable kind and the rechargeable, refillable ones.

The disposable ones are basic to use. You only open up the package, use, and then discard once it’s empty. Disposable e-cigs come with a pre-charged battery and set amount of e-liquid. These can not be refilled or recharged. At least they are cheap.

For rechargeable e-cigs, they have two different models: the KR808 series which consists of 2 pieces and the 501 series which is 3 pieces. The KR808 series is simple to use; all you have to do is screw on the new cartomizer and draw from the device.

To charge your e-cig, you would need to use the charger that came with it. Just plug it in, and you are ready to go. Some models even allow for use while charging and charging on the computer. If an e-cig is right for you, check out our best e-cigs page.

JUUL eCig Review

Closed pod vapes work in similar ways to e-cigs.

All you need to make your pod vape work are the pre-filled cartridges (that come with the device) and the device itself. Simply pop in the pod into the battery and then draw.

Many of the cartridges, like JUUL, act as a mouthpiece as well, so in the literal sense, you pop in and pull. One example of such device (and definitely my personal favorite eCig) is the JUUL by PAX Vapor.

The great thing about these closed pods is that they do not require you to press any firing button while you vape, at least in the case with JUUL.

If you need to check on battery status, there will be LED indicators on the device as well. When you need to charge, just use the charger, it came with, plug in, and wait the required time before you use again.

Using your vape pen for the first time doesn’t have to be difficult. Before we get into filling your vape pen with e-liquid, there are a few things that you should know.

First, after taking your vape pen out of the box for the first time, do not press the fire button. Whatsoever. Your vape pen will have a brand spanking new coil inside and no e-liquid in the tank. Doing this can destroy your coil head.

Second, you need to make sure that you don’t accidentally send power to the dry coil inside of your vape pen (first-time use).

To avoid this, make sure that the vape is turned off and then detach the tank portion of the vape pen from the battery portion. Then put it back on and fill it with your favorite vape juice. My personal favorite is the Element Dripper Series.

Before we get into how to use your vape pen, there are still a few tid bits you need to learn about the atomizer in your vape. First, do note that you will have to install a new coil head every week or so. The coil heads are responsible for turning your e-juice into vapor and they are easy to install by just screwing it onto the tank.

Next, you would need to take the e-liquid that you plan to use and fill the tank of the vape pen to that right level. Then, you would need to wait at least 15 minutes before turning it on to allow the wick to soak up the juice. If you don’t wait, you will be left with a bad aftertaste.

To turn on your vape pen, most models require you to press the fire button five times. The same applies to turning it off. When you use your vape pen for the first time, turn it on and make sure that it is at the lowest setting. You can find the recommended setting in the user manual of your vape pen.

To vape, simply put your mouth on the mouthpiece and draw while simultaneously pressing the firing button.

For sub-ohm tanks, let’s explore how to fill them.

Smok TFV8 Baby Beast & Cloud Beast

Depending on what type of tank you have, you might need to either load it from the bottom or the top.

Most sub-ohm tanks are filled from the bottom, however, if you have a tank that uses the top-fill method (like the Freemax Starre Pure), then all you would need to do is unscrew the top or uncover a filling port.

To continue with your refill, take the dripper top from your vape juice bottle and use it to fill your tank’s reservoir to its max fill level.

This would usually be marked by a notch or other built-in design feature.

To avoid getting e-liquid into the center tube, tilt your tank while you fill. The e-juice would drip down the inside of the tank, much in the same way that a bartender would pour a beer into a mug or glass. As it fills, straighten out the tank so that you don’t overfill it. To take a look at the best sub-ohm tanks on the market, check out my best 510 tanks page.

If you do happen to get some vape juice in the center tube, just take a paper towel, place it over the end of the mouthpiece and blow hard on the other end. This should clear out any e-liquid inside.

? Pro Tip:

Avoid getting e-liquid into the center tube. This can lead to leaking because the center tube connects straight to the mouthpiece and to the base of the tank. E-juice invading your tube can also flood your coil which means that too much liquid has gotten into the coil chamber. This can significantly impact the performance of your atomizer and leads to gurgling.

Final Thoughts

Using an e-liquid vaporizer for the first time can be frustrating. However, it doesn’t have to be. Armed with this information, you can accomplish making the most out of your vaping experience. Now, let’s do a quick recap.

E-cigs are either disposable or replaceable (refillable). For disposables, only throw it out once it’s done. For replaceable, just replace the cartomizer by screwing on another one. For refillable, only refill the cartridge with e-liquid.

Closed pods are a piece of cake. To start, just pop in a fresh cartridge and draw without pushing a button. Once done, eject it and initiate the process all over again. Vape pens are a little trickier. To turn them on, just press the fire button five times. Before you do so, make sure to follow the steps to avoid messing up your coil head like not turning it on right out of the box.

Next, fill it up with your vape juice and wait for the wick to absorb the juice.

For sub-ohm tanks, depending on the fill method, just unscrew the top, take your e-liquid, and fill the tank at an angle all while not getting the e-juice into the center tube. To find the perfect e-liquid to pair with your sub-ohm tank, check out our best e-liquids page.

See how easy that was?
