HoneyStick Ripper Review
The HoneyStick Ripper is a follow up to the HoneyStick Rippo, and in many ways, it is a worthy one. However, even though it is better than before thanks to a cooler look and the ability to vape wax and oil, it’s still not a great extract vaporizer. The reason is that it has an uncomfortable vaping position and switching or refilling the wax and oil tanks is a very laborious process. The Ripper is a solid vape that’s great for discreet use but if it’s functionality and user-friendliness you want, then this is not your best option.
HoneyStick Ripper Background
Well, this is an interesting one, the HoneyStick Ripper ($139 directly from HoneyStick, use our exclusive HoneyStick Coupon Code TVG18 for an 18% discount) is a stealthy, stylish extract vaporizer, shaped just like an upscale cigarette lighter. If that sounds familiar, then you’ve no doubt heard of its predecessor, the HoneyStick Rippo.
The Ripper is an improvement on the original because it has a much cooler shell, it can vape wax and oil, and it fixes some of the original’s problems. So, does that mean the Ripper can now compete with the best extract vaporizers around? You can find out by reading the rest of my HoneyStick Ripper review.

Design of The Ripper
The Rippo was already a very cool looking vaporizer and the Ripper is even more handsomely designed. Like the original, it looks just like a high-end cigarette lighter at first glance, the only things that betray its true nature are the viewing portal on the side that allows you to monitor the level of your oil and the USB port on the back. Otherwise, this is one of the most wonderfully sneaky vaporizers ever designed. The jig is up if someone asks you for a light of course.
The body of the Ripper now has a rubberized texture that gives it a more solid grip and an even more distinctive look. The cap flips open with the same satisfying spring of the original, and its one button operation means it’s very simple to use. HoneyStick also addressed one of the bigger problems of the Rippo, namely that the mouthpiece was very hard to remove. Now, you just unscrew the mouthpiece when you want to access the tank.
Some of the same attributes that contribute to the Ripper’s style and portability also make it difficult to use. The power button is located under the cap right next to the mouthpiece, this is an awkward setup that is exacerbated by the short mouthpiece. Since you need to hold down the power button as you inhale, vaping feels—and no doubt looks—very awkward. There’s not much you can do about it since the mouthpiece is short because it has to fit underneath the cap. Removing and replacing the tanks can be cumbersome because of the need to unscrew and then replace the mouthpiece whenever you need to change tanks.
How to Use it
With the Oil Tank
- Remove the plunger from the oil tank and then pour in oil up to the fill line.
- Replace the plunger and then place the tank into the tank receptacle.
- Screw the mouthpiece onto the tank tightly and then insert it into the device.
- Press the power button 5x to turn on the device.
- Once heating is complete, inhale from the mouthpiece while holding down the power button.
With the Wax Tank
- Unscrew the cap from the wax tank.
- Dab your wax onto the coils and then replace the cap on to the tank.
- Insert the wax tank into the Ripper and then tightly screw on the mouthpiece.
- Press the power button 5x to turn on the device.
- Once the device has finished heating, inhale form the mouthpiece while holding down the power button.
How the Ripper Performs
If you’re into high-intensity vaping, then the Ripper could well be for you, as the sole, default temperature is quite high. So avid vapers who enjoy that kind of experience will like the Ripper because this vape hits hard. Even using the lower concentration Goldline CBD Crumble felt strong, needless to say, this extract vaporizer isn’t for newbies. The lack of temperature control does mean that there are no adjustments to be made once you turn on the Ripper, but that convenience is a double-edged sword.
Even seasoned vapers might like to calibrate their sessions every now and then, so a little temperature control would have been a nice option. As it stands, the only way to really lower the intensity a little is to pulse the power by turning the device on and off while you vape so the device never reaches its full temperature. This works fairly well, but can be a little annoying because of two factors, one of which is that it takes 5 clicks of the power button to turn the Ripper on and off.
The other factor is that the power button is located right next to the very short mouthpiece, vaping already feels awkward with this setup and having to cycle the power in this position makes it feel even moreso. No complaints about the 1300 mAh battery. It can last for days without a recharge. The recharge time is longer than usual, but considering how infrequently you have to do it, the battery is a net positive overall.
The Final Word
The HoneyStick Ripper ($139 directly from HoneyStick, coupon code TVG18 saves you 18%) is an interesting extract vaporizer that has a lot of positives and a few negatives that let down the overall experience. On the good side, it manages to look cool and be discreet at the same time: an impressive feat. It can vape both wax and oils at a high intensity that longtime vapers will love.
The downside is that filling and/or switching each of the tanks is an involved and time-consuming process, one that takes a lot longer than it does in most other extract vaporizers. Also, while the Ripper is nice and compact, that compactness does give it a somewhat cumbersome vaping position because of the short mouthpiece. The high temperature is great for high intensity vaping, but some temperature calibration options could have broadened its appeal even more.
The Ripper can compete with the Best Oil Vaporizers and the Best Wax Vaporizers when it comes to style and concealment, but when it comes to function, it’s an also-ran. Thanks for reading my HoneyStick Ripper review, it’s an improvement over the Rippo but not quite good enough to reach the upper echelon of extract vaporizers.
