Optional Accessories

If you’re using the Explore with herb, then you’ll need a good grinder to get that herb to the right consistency. The SLX is just the grinder you need. It has a smooth grinding action, a built-in kief catcher, and it never needs cleaning. If you’re interested, you can get one from Amazon.

Design and Features

Yocan Explore Design
The Explore is a decent looking device but the vents are poorly placed because they affect the flavor of the vapor.

General Design: The Explore looks like your average box style vaporizer. It isn’t a bad looking device though there’s nothing too distinctive about it either. It has a clear LCD screen located near its base with the power button above it and the two temperature control buttons below it. The power button is well placed, but the control buttons sit a little too low for my liking, not to mention that they’re pretty small, so using them never feels all that comfortable.

Switching out the different mouthpieces is pretty easy since you just need to unscrew one and screw in the other. That simple operation makes the Explore one of the easier two-in-one vaporizers to use. The dry herb mouthpiece has a stirring tool built into it, which is a nice feature since you can stir the herb even while you’re vaping.

Portability: The Explore is a pretty portable device because it’s a little under four inches tall. It’s a little wider than you might expect, but that doesn’t affect the travel friendliness too much. The mouthpieces are both the same length so it doesn’t matter which one you decide to take with you. If you decide to take both, then you need to worry about how you’ll transport the one not attached to the Explore, but that’s your only concern as far as portability goes.

Build Quality: The housing of the Explore feels sturdy and the mouthpieces attach to it securely. The problem comes with the airflow because the intake vents are located close to the electrical components. That means it is possible for the vapor to get mixed in with the heated air that comes off the electronics. Needless to say, that is not something you want from your vaporizer.

Cleaning and Maintenance

The herb chamber and the concentrate coil can be cleaned using the included cleaning brush. For some extra deep cleaning, you can soak a q-tip or cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol and run it around either of the chambers.

How to Use

With Dry Herb

  1. Fill the chamber with herb and then screw on the dry herb mouthpiece.
  2. Press the power button five times to turn on the device.
  3. Use the selection buttons to choose a temperature and then hold down the power button for three seconds to start heating.
  4. Once heating is complete, inhale from the mouthpiece.

With Wax Concentrates

  1. Unscrew the coil from the mouthpiece of the coil/mouthpiece attachment.
  2. Dab some wax into the coil and then screw it back onto the mouthpiece.
  3. Screw the coil/mouthpiece combo onto the rest of the device.
  4. Press the power button five times to turn on the device.
  5. Use the selection buttons to choose a temperature and then hold down the power button for three seconds to start heating.
  6. Once heating is complete, inhale from the mouthpiece.

Temperature Range: 200°F – 460°F

Performance and Vapor Quality

Yocan Explore Performance
The vapor quality from the dry herb is mediocre and the flavor falls off rather quickly.

Vaporizer Performance: The Explore doesn’t take too long to heat up and it never gets too warm to hold while you’re vaping. So, overall, it performs pretty well.

Vapor Quality: With dry herb, the vapor quality is below average. There is a strange taste to the vapor, the first few times you use the Explore but it goes away after a few heat cycles. For that reason, I would suggest that you run the device through a few heat cycles before adding any herb to the chamber. Once you do get rid of the strange taste, the vapor quality improves but is still just okay even when compared to other vapes in this price range. Worse still is that the vapor quality declines quickly as you vape so whatever flavor you get from the Explore doesn’t last too long.

The concentrate performance is even worse because the Explore doesn’t reach the temperatures that concentrates need to get vaporized properly. Even if you’re a fan of low temperature vaping—and I am—you won’t be satisfied with the performance of this vape. Since the temperature never gets too high, there isn’t a whole lot of vapor produced.

Battery Performance: The Explore has a 2600 mAh battery and is good for about ninety minutes, which is pretty good.
