KandyPens Rubi Review

KandyPens Rubi Background

KandyPens RUBI with e-juice Review

The KandyPens Rubi features an open pod system that can use any type of e-liquid or oil extracts available.

KandyPens has had the vape pen game on lock for a while now. Meanwhile, JUUL has had a stranglehold on the e-cigarette market. Now KandyPens has entered the e-cig market with the Rubi, which means that it’s a clash of the vape titans. Does the Rubi have what it takes to challenge the dominance of the JUUL?

Let’s see, it’s an open pod system, which means that it can use any type of e-liquid or oil extract, so you’re not limited to pre-filled pods. It’s also leak proof, dry hit proof, and spit-back proof. And it’s available in a variety of cool colors, if you care about that sort of thing (I do). So does the Rubi have what it takes to challenge the JUUL? In a word, yes. No KandyPens Rubi review is complete without more details, so let me tell you more about this contender for the title of Best Oil Vaporizer around.

  • KandyPens 1 mL refillable Rubi pod and mouthpiece
  • Micro-USB cable

KandyPens RUBI e-cig Review

The KandyPens Rubi has a simple, elegant design that feels good whether you’re vaping from it or just holding it.

The Rubi stands four inches tall, a little taller than most e-cigs but still small enough for easy portability. It has a similar design to most e-cigs except that it has a smoother, more rounded design that’s quite handsome, and there are a whole bunch of cool colors to choose from. It feels good to hold and inhaling from the mouthpiece is comfortable because of the rounded edges.

Removing the mouthpiece when it’s time for a refill is simple and the refilling procedure is fairly easy. You just twist off the secure rubber stopper and insert the nozzle of the e-liquid bottle, simple, but you need to be careful to avoid any spills.

One design shortcoming is that there is no viewing portal, or similar feature, to monitor the level of e-liquid left in the pod. You need to remove the pod from the battery to check, or wait until the flavor goes off, neither choice is ideal, but in the long run, this is a relatively minor problem.

Vapor Quality and Performance

KandyPens RUBI lots of vapor Review

The KandyPens Rubi can produce some serious vapor along with its excellent flavor.

Since it’s an open pod system, the Rubi is designed to work with pretty much every kind of e-liquid or oil out there. I couldn’t exactly test it out with every kind of e-liquid or oil out there, but I used quite a few, including Sun State and Hemp Bombs CBD oil. The flavor quality and cloud production varies depending on each e-liquids’ VG/PG ratios of course, as well as the quality of the CBD oil. In all cases, it was clear that the Rubi was bringing out the full flavor and the maximum cloud cover of the e-liquid, and the complete flavor and effects of the CBD oil.

If you like the nicotine salt hit of the JUUL pods, then you’re in luck, the Rubi works great with nic salts as well, particularly the KandyPens Rubi Salts. You can probably guess that these were made especially for the Rubi, you can probably also guess that they vape and taste great. The Rubi has a smooth draw resistance and I haven’t experienced any leaks, dry hits, or spit-back the entire time I’ve been using it.

It works using both MTL (mouth to lung) and DLI (direct lung inhale) vaping techniques, so it’s a pretty versatile e-cig. You’ll need to replace the mouthpiece when performance starts to decline, but that should take a while because the ceramic coil lined with Japanese cotton is pretty durable. The 280 maH Li ion battery lasts for about 2 hours, which is about 250 puffs, and it charges in about 80 minutes. One nice thing is that it uses an easily replaceable, standard micro-USB charger instead of a proprietary charger.

The Last Word

KandyPens RUBI refillable pod Review

The Rubi can vape oil at the same high level as e-liquids.

The KandyPens Rubi is definitely a contender that could become the champion, it’s certainly got the looks, the versatility, and the quality to do so. Add in the customized line of Rubi Salts and you’ve got one of the best e-cigs around, not to mention one of the best oil vapes. It’s got its share of competitors, not just the JUUL, but KandyPens’ own Feather as well.

So can it stand up to the JUUL? Definitely, and you can find out more in my Rubi vs JUUL comparison. It’s certainly the more versatile of the two because of the open pod system that allows it to use e-liquids, nic salts, and oil extracts. If you’re interested, then you can get it for $49.95 directly from KandyPens and you can use coupon code TVG25 for a 25% discount.

  1. exact copy of the pax era LOL

    • Not really. The Era is closed POD system ONLY for proprietary Pre-filled THC oil cartridges.
The RUBI is an open system (meaning refillable), it has a ceramic coil, and you can choose which liquid/ oil you want to use.
So the two are in different categories and both are awesome devices.

  2. How many refills did one pod last?
How does the LED work (where does it light up, battery indicator, etc.)

Coils turning black already on mine they use cotton wicking, would prefer silicia pads. Only filled once with terp infused extract.. Will have to see how it holds up with mr salt e. But its a bit of a let down as far as oil goes.

  5. Any idea on how to clean these reusable pods? I’ve heard one person suggest vinegar, but wouldn’t that mess with the cotton? Anyone have a foolproof way to clean these babies?

  6. What cbd oil do you recommend using with the Kandypens Rubi?

  7. I’ve been thru three different ones and about 7 pods all the same result no matter if it’s just oil or oil with terpenes. It works fine with just terpenes thou but not what I wanted it for. I’ve two in hand. One wast warrantied since it quit working but did the same as the other two rubi pens. I have two so one is charging while I used my back up so they are rotated once needed to charge. Kandypen says it’s the turpines but is total bs. it works fine with just terpenes since it’s a whole lot less viscous. It doesn’t get hot enough for natural oils. So I say look at a different model if you want to use it for oils. My pain and trouble will benefit you in this review. It didn’t do it to all of them but over half of the pods I own have thou.

  8. It’s surprising refillable pod vapes like the Rubi aren’t more popular than their non-refillable counterparts given how much of a difference there is between e-juice flavor options. On one hand, you have all the flavors on the market accessible to you. And on the other hand, you have just the flavors that the manufacturer offers, which in some cases is very few. Seems like a no-brainer.
