KandyPens Rubi Review Bottom Line

The KandyPens Rubi is a brand new e-cig that's already a major challenger to the JUUL and all the other e-cigs out there. That's because the Rubi has an open pod system that allows you to use any type of e-liquid you want. The Rubi is also really durable, it's leak proof, dry hit proof, and spit back proof. If you like the JUUL but want more e-juice choices then the Rubi is for you!

KandyPens Rubi Background

KandyPens recently entered the e-cig marketplace with the Feather, now they’re back again with the Rubi ($49.95 directly from KandyPens, use coupon code TVG25 for a 25% sitewide discount). It seems KandyPens is intent on cornering the market even though some of the Best e-cigs around stand in their way.

So what makes the KandyPens Rubi so special? Whereas the Feather is specifically designed for nicotine salts, the Rubi is designed to be used with any e-liquid you want. This is a big deal since so few e-cigs give you that option, with most of them you can only use the pre-filled pods they provide.

But you don’t just get more e-juice choices, you also get KandyPens slick style as well. To find out what else you get from this e-cigarette, check out the rest of the KandyPens Rubi review for all the kit, performance, and design details.

KandyPens RUBI with e-liquid Review
The KandyPens Rubi works with any type of e-liquid, including Element’s line of nicotine salts.

KandyPens Rubi Kit

E-cigs tend to have pretty basic kits and the KandyPens Rubi is no different, here’s what’s inside it:

  • KandyPens Rubi
  • 1 mL refillable Rubi pod
  • micro-USB cable

You’ll have to find your own e-liquid of course, I recommend Element e-liquids. They have a wide variety of flavors and types, including the latest hotness, nicotine salts. They’re a great way to break in your Rubi.

Key Features of the KandyPens Rubi

The big deal is the refillable pod of course, but there are some other features that’ll catch your attention, let’s take a look:

  • Compatible w/ a variety of e-liquids
  • 1 mL Rubi pod can be filled w/ any e-liquid you want
  • Draw activated, no power button needed
  • Micro-USB cable can be easily replaced
  • Completely leak proof

KandyPens RUBI pod Review
The refillable Rubi pod is one of the standout features of the KandyPens Rubi.

KandyPens Rubi Design

The KandyPens Rubi is four inches tall, slightly taller than other e-cigs but still really small of course. It has a smooth, rounded design that’s rather elegant. The mouthpiece feels comfortable and it’s easy to remove when you need to refill the Rubi pod. Refilling is pretty easy but you have to be precise to avoid spills. You just twist the rubber stopper on the Rubi pod and pull on its wings to remove it when it’s time for a refill.

The only problem I have with the design is that there isn’t a window or portal to monitor the level of e-liquid. You have to remove the mouthpiece to check or wait till the flavor goes off.  Neither is an ideal solution but this isn’t a huge problem, it’s just an inconvenience.

KandyPens RUBI e-cig Review
The KandyPens Rubi has a simple, elegant design that feels good whether you’re vaping from it or just holding it.

Using the KandyPens Rubi

E-cigs are notoriously easy to use and the Rubi is no different:

  1. Remove the mouthpiece from the Rubi’s body.
  2. Remove the rubber stopper from the pod, fill the pod with your e-liquid, and replace the stopper.
  3. Prime the Rubi pod. *details below*
  4. Replace the mouthpiece on the Rubi’s body and inhale.

It’s important to prime the Rubi pod before step 4, this is a very short, quick process. Simply inhale from the mouthpiece 3-5 times before moving on to step 4. Skipping this step will result in dry hits and you definitely don’t want that. You only need to do this once per Rubi pod.

Filling the Rubi pod is a simple process that does not take a lot of time.

KandyPens Rubi Performance and Vapor Quality

I expected a lot from the KandyPens Rubi and it didn’t let me down. This e-cig hit the jackpot no matter what kind of e-liquid I was using. I tried it with nicotine salts and with e-juices of varying VG/PG ratios and got full flavor and voluminous vapor every time.

The Rubi pod uses a ceramic coil lined with Japanese cotton and, aside from providing excellent flavor, it’s pretty durable. I used the Rubi a lot without any performance decline, so it’s unlikely that the mouthpiece will need frequent replacing. The leak proof design works too, I didn’t get any spit back or dry hits the entire time I used it.

Draw resistance is nice and smooth and it works great whether you’re using MTL (mouth to lung) or DLI (direct lung inhale) techniques. This is one of the more versatile e-cigs I’ve used so far.

Battery and Charging

Battery Type – 280 mAh Li ion
Battery Duration – 1-2 hours= ~250 puffs
Charge Time – ~80 minutes

KandyPens RUBI lots of vapor Review
The KandyPens Rubi can produce some serious vapor along with its excellent flavor.

KandyPens Rubi vs Similar E-cigs

KandyPens Rubi vs JUUL

Every new e-cig has to be compared to the JUUL, it’s the king of the e-cig marketplace. The JUUL is a closed pod system though, which means that you can only vape what JUUL gives you. Here is a brief look at their differences, for more details check out my Rubi vs JUUL comparison:

KandyPens RUBI vs JUUL comparison
The JUUL (L) and the KandyPens Rubi (R) are similar in the way they look and the way they function.
  • excellent flavor quality
  • it closely mimics the sensation of smoking
  • JUUL pods are included in starter kit
  • costs roughly the same as the Rubi ($49.99 from JUUL Vapor)

  • has a smaller 200 mAh battery
  • has a slightly stronger draw resistance

The JUUL is still great but now it has some serious competition in the Rubi.

KandyPens Rubi vs KandyPens Feather

Yep, KandyPens has just entered the e-cig market and already they’re competing against themselves. They’re not pulling any punches either, since the Feather is also a great e-cig. Here’s what you can expect from it:

  • has a cool look
  • provides great vapor quality
  • can use other e-liquids

Even though the Feather is also an open pod design, it’s more specialized than the Rubi.

KandyPens Rubi vs VapeDynamics Cora

The Cora is another pretty good choice that’s more versatile than the Rubi:

  • open pod design can vape e-liquids and THC oil
  • has a bigger battery (500 mAh)
  • Has a lower price ($39.99 from VapeDynamics)

  • requires the use of proprietary droppers to fill pod
  • need to use a power button to turn it on and off

It seems like the better choice so far but the Rubi is much easier and more convenient to use.

KandyPens Rubi Review: Final Thoughts

KandyPens always makes a big splash with one of their new products and the Rubi ($49.95 directly from KandyPens, use coupon code TVG25 for a 25% discount) follows that trend. It’s open pod design gives users the option to use whatever e-liquids they want, something even the Best e-cigs rarely do. Regular e-liquids? You got it. Nicotine Salts? Definitely. CBD e-liquids? Absolutely.

You get the full flavor of every type of e-liquid you use and if you want big vapor, you get that too. The Rubi is super simple to use because it’s air activated. It’s pretty durable too, I haven’t experienced any leaks after over a week of use.

I also like the little things, like how the Rubi uses a standard micro USB charger instead of a proprietary charger so it’s easy to find a replacement if it gets lost. I love the JUUL as much as anyone but I can’t deny that the Rubi is some serious competition. Try it and you’ll see why.

  1. exact copy of the pax era LOL

    • Not really. The Era is closed POD system ONLY for proprietary Pre-filled THC oil cartridges.
The RUBI is an open system (meaning refillable), it has a ceramic coil, and you can choose which liquid/ oil you want to use.
So the two are in different categories and both are awesome devices.

Coils turning black already on mine they use cotton wicking, would prefer silicia pads. Only filled once with terp infused extract.. Will have to see how it holds up with mr salt e. But its a bit of a let down as far as oil goes.

  5. Any idea on how to clean these reusable pods? I’ve heard one person suggest vinegar, but wouldn’t that mess with the cotton? Anyone have a foolproof way to clean these babies?
