In-Depth Santa Cruz Shredder Review:
When you grind with the Santa Cruz, the end result produced will be visibly as good as that of any generic 4-piece grinder or even a pair of scissors. But when you vape with the material, the effect will be far better than anything. Being a seasoned vaper, I can feel the difference in the quality of the vapor produced.
Every vaping enthusiast understands the important of grinding. Ideally, the end product should be very fine but at the same time, it should not pass through the screens of your vaporizer. This is a tricky combination to achieve with a grinder. It’s because you have to have a product that has the maximum surface area that comes in contact with the heat. At least for me, this is the sole criteria for judging the performance of a grinder. And the Santa Cruz gives me these results without any hiccups. I believe the manufacturer has invested a lot of technology in the design of the tooth of the grinder to achieve such results. The Santa Cruz not only grinds your herb but also fluffs it up. This is the unique feature of this grinder that gives such exhilarating vaping experience.
Having talked about the grinding prowess of the Santa Cruz Shredder, now let’s talk about its build quality. It is a small 4-piece grinder that feels really good in the hand. The all-aluminum parts come in an anodized finish which hardens the aluminum making it more resilient against scratches, tooth damage, and thread damage. It features three separate chambers; the top and center chambers are connected by a series of openings that allow herb that has been ground down to a small size to fall through. The center chamber is connected to the bottom chamber via an extra-fine stainless steel mesh screen which allows the smallest pollen particles to fall through which are extremely potent and can be saved for future use.
They have used magnets to connect all the components for the Santa Cruz Shredder. While piece one and two are joined by a magnet that holds the whole unit intact, the piece two, three and four are put together by a unique threaded pattern. The magnet does a fantastic job of keeping the lid secured to the grinder while still allowing it to turn freely in either direction. The threaded connection that allows the rest of the grinder to securely screw together makes a solid connection right away. The unique threading pattern prevents the threads from grinding against each other while trying to catch a connection; the overall mechanism lowers wear on the threads as well as any risk of damaging the threads by cross-threading. This is a far more sophisticated mechanism than those found in cross-threading grinders. This grinder doesn’t only wear off easily but also make the grinding process more difficult for the user.
For added grip, the top and bottom pieces of the Santa Cruz comes with a ridged pattern around the rim. This little change in design adds volumes to the performance of the Santa Cruz and at the same time makes the grinding very simple and easy. The added grip that you get from the ridges comes in handy when you’re grinding and the grinder gets caught on a stem. In this situation, you don’t have to remove the cover, just continue grinding and you will get the finest of ground material.
The Santa Cruz Shredder has various sizes, colors, and compositions (2-piece and 4-piece). The combinations are numerous. The grinder picture below is the Small 4-Piece Black Glossy Finish and measures 2-1/8″ in diameter. Worth noting is that size naming conventions are not standardized across manufacturers, so a small grinder from one manufacturer could be the same size as a medium grinder from another. The small Santa Cruz Shredder sized grinders (at least the 4-piece that I’ve tested) is the perfect size for personal use. I would equate personal use to include grinding for sessions of up to a few people. The next size up (Large) measures 2¾” an increase of 5/8″ to the diameter, while the next size down (Mini) measures 1⅝” diameter. The Mini I would recommend for a travel 4-piece grinder, but the small seems to be the perfect fit as a personal use at-home grinder.
Santa Cruz Shredder Grinder Sizing Chart:
A good grinder should be a standard part of every enthusiast. Many people (myself included) started with an inexpensive grinder that may use pyramid shaped teeth, or a copied diamond pattern found on other higher end grinders. Those grinders will only ever be “good enough” because they were designed with a profit margin in mind rather than product quality. The folks over at Santa Cruz Shredder designed a grinder with the intention of raising the bar on what the end user should expect from a grinder, and in my opinion, they have succeeded. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t still improvements that can be made to the entire grinding process, there still have times that I had to use a pick or brush to push the herbs out of nooks that the teeth weren’t able to reach in the top chamber. The Small 4-Piece Santa Cruz Shredder (which may be considered medium by other manufacturers standards) is priced competitively or even below the cost of other high-end grinders.
